What you should know about Tasmanian Saffron

Agriculture in Huon Valley, Specialty Food in Huon Valley

Terry and Micky Noonan started TasSaff in 1990 on three acres of land overlooking the Hon River at Glaziers Bay, TasSaff is now a thriving commercial saffron producer and has developed a network of 50 growers throughout Australia. Big-hearted up their secure jobs was made easier by their purchase of a trivial cottage on 3 acres in the idyllic Hon Valley in the state’s south, famed for fruit production. Being foodies, it was while having friends over for a visit from Sydney, that they decided to prepare a paella, and found it difficult to source saffron locally. Curiosity prevailed and the couple found that Tasmania had ideal conditions for growing saffron, and that the huge majority of saffron sold in Australia was imported. Terry and Micky sensed the opportunity of replacing imported provide with home grown saffron. This led to a outrageous love affair with the small red threads that has spanned almost three decades. Recovering from once in a century flooding which almost wiped out their whole crop in only their third year, TasSaff have risen to become the maximum successful saffron producers in Australia. TasSaff have slowly built up a strong network of growers to supply demand for their products more than 50 individual growers contribute to TasSaff products. To put this in perspective, and to illustrate the labourintensive nature of the process, for the annual combined TasSaff crop, the stigmas or threads from millions of flowers have to be handpicked, measured, tested, weighed and bottled. No wonder saffron is more expensive than gold gram for gram.

This ISO testing is a world standard of testing the quality of saffron. This saffron is grown in Spain under a fully recorded and documented HACCP accreditation food safety standard and is traceable to the farm gate in Spain. Producing the worlds greatest quality saffron for culinary, general health and lifestyle uses. The maximum sought after spice in the world. Growing only the highest quality saffron for the most incredible flavor and aroma, TasSaff saffron is graded in laboratory conditions against international standards. Using tall quality infused saffron releases a golden yellow color and an exotic aroma to your dish, which can make an impressive difference to the taste of your cooking. Saffron is a spice derived from the dried stigma of the flower of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), a species of crocus in the family Iridaceae. Together with its style, the stalk connecting the stigmas to the rest of the plant, these components are often dried and impaired in cooking as a seasoning and coloring agent. The first is that in order to extract 1kg of saffron from crocuses, the stigmas of almost a quarter of a million flowers must be handpicked, dried and bottled which is incredibly labourintensive. As our saffron is of the uppermost quality, far less of it is needed in your cooking. Cooking with the most sought after spice in the world. Hide tightly with a lid and cook over lofty heat for 4 minutes or until mussels open. Total the fish to the pan and cook for a further 3 minutes. Cook for a further 30 seconds and separate from the heat. Increase the liquid from the mussel pot to the saffron broth and adjust seasoning to taste. Garnish with new herbs and serve with crusty bread or your favorite pasta. The reason for this is that TasSaff maintains only the greatest quality of saffron in its products and many of the other saffron products being marketed worldwide are of a under or mixed quality saffron. Although saffron is water soluble, it can be infused into alcohols, acidic liquids and cold water preparations, and threads will remain to release their flavor and aromas for up to 24 hours. 4.2 Any order placed through this Site for a Product is an offer by you to purchase the particular Product for the price notified (including the delivery and other charges and taxes) at the time you store the order. 5.3 If we reject an order placed through the Site, then we will endeavor to notify you of that rejection at the time you place the order or within a believable time after you comply your order.
